Kieran Jordan Dance Workshop 2

  • BelfastTrad Online (map)

Second of a two-part workshop series with first workshop on 20th March.

Kieran Jordan

Boston-based Kieran Jordan is an innovator and tradition-bearer in the field of Irish dance. With a style described as “playfully theatrical” (The Boston Globe) and “wonderfully expressive” (The Living Tradition), she is a teacher, performer, and choreographer, and the founder and director of the Kieran Jordan Dance company and studio. Drawing from her training in contemporary dance, somatic work, and more than 40 years of immersion in traditional Irish dance, Kieran is regarded as “one of America’s premier dancers and instructors” (Irish Echo).

Old Style Irish Step Dancing with Kieran Jordan

“Old Style” Irish Step Dancing developed in the 18th and 19th Centuries throughout Ireland. Traveling dance masters composed intricate hornpipes, jigs, reels, and set dances, and were renowned for their detailed teaching methods, feisty performances, and signature footwork styles. Their steps — like “drums,” “rocks,” “tipping” and “toe clicks” — have evolved over the years into our modern Irish dance vocabulary. Kieran's repertoire of old style step dances comes directly from teachers including Joe O'Donovan, Patrick O'Dea, Michael Tubridy, Jonathan Kelliher and others. In this class, Kieran will teach a set dance of her own choreography created in the traditional old style.
